Alternative Causes for Enforced Localisation

The four scenarios on this site were intentionally given positive outcomes - Localisation, in particular, could have turned out a lot worse. This makes it imporant to remember that these scenarios are not predictions, and their purpose is to help us create flexible and adaptable plans for the future.

Some visitors to the site have chastised us for ignoring such potential spanners-in-the- works as war and climate change.  Since no-one knows whether Ireland will get a Mediterranean climate or if the Gulf Stream will switch off and make the country much colder, we feel that climate change deserves a whole set of scenarios to itself Certainly, we cannot deal with the range of climate possiblities within the energy-price scenarios we have here.  Moreover, if climate change turns out to be sudden and rapid, everything will change so drasically that all bets will be off.

Other visitors have pointed out that war and/or an increase in global terrorism could certainly lead to a version of Localisation. We agree. So could a revaluation of the Chinese currency, a reason recently suggested by my father in his blog The Sty

If you can think of other possible causes, please post them, or your comments on other people’s suggestions here.
